THIRTEEN

Chana offered to come to my house when we left the school—yeah, I was shocked—but I had other plans. “Come on,” I told her, heading around the corner, away from either of our homes.

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.”

We walked down the block that ran alongside the school and up Monroe Street, past where Mr. Tobias’s house had been. And for a moment, I got a familiar eerie feeling. In the future, I’d avoid that end of Monroe Street. Everything was still too fresh. I could still hear the sound the Principal Vernon monster made as he was turning in that basement next door.

A few blocks away, we reached Teddy’s house, and I walked up the driveway.

Chana followed. “Why are we at Theodore’s?”

“Because you heard him in the locker room. They all went to Justin’s to eat, and his parents aren’t home. I need to get into his room.”

“Oh yeah, it’s—what did he call it? Hamaeggarye time. How do you know Theodore’s parents aren’t home?” she asked.

I gestured at the empty driveway. “No car. They never park in the garage. There’s no room.”

“Why do you need to get into his room?”

“Chana, we used to be here,” I said, pointing two fingers at her eyes, and then at mine and back at hers. “You knew what I was thinking as soon as I thought it. What’s happening to you?”

She pursed her lips. “Are you implying that Quincy would know what you’re thinking?”

“I didn’t even mention Quincy.” I closed my eyes.

“What are you doing?”

“Sending brain waves at you.”

She rolled her eyes. “Wow. You know good and well I know you’re after his journal. What makes you think it’s in his room? And why are you so anxious about it?”

“He wrote what Mr. Tobias told him about me in it, so it probably tells how to help me. You already know this. I’m tired of waiting for him to share it with me. I need to read it today.”

“Okay then, Chica. What are we doing?”

“It’s winter—”

“It’s spring.”

“Well, it’s still cold. None of their windows will be open. So we can’t get inside that way.” I walked up the driveway. “Actually, I don’t think it’s in his house at all. I know Teddy.”

“Then where is it?”

“The garage. He knows me. I bet he figures at some point I will come looking for it, and maybe my gleamer power or an angel can get me into his house.” I lifted a brow at Chana.

She shook her head. “No, I can’t. So stop with that look.”

I walked up to the side door of the garage and turned the knob. “It’s unlocked,” I said as I pushed the door open.

The garage wasn’t attached to the house like most homes in the neighborhood, and Teddy’s father used it more as a workshop. We went inside, and a chill swept over us.

I rubbed my arms. “Is it me, or is it colder in here than it was outside?”

Chana shrugged and went over to a stack of bins. “Let’s find that journal so we can get out of here.
